Sometimes, your outlet receptacle is not flush with the wall. This may be due to the addition of a granite slab to a backsplash, wainscoting trim added to a wall, or the removal of wood paneling. Your receptacle may be sitting below the surface of the sheetrock or be protruding from it. Here are your options:
Receptacles too recessed into the wall? If your outlet sits too far into the outlet box, you can easily raise the device to be flush with the plaster or drywall by using a box extender or by threading small hex nuts onto the screws between the wall/box and the back of the device tabs to bring it forward slightly. Note: You may need longer screws for this fix.
Receptacles stick out too far from the wall? If standard light switch plates are leaving a gap by the wall, you have two options. Use a deep or even an extra deep outlet cover plate, or use a plastic riser with a standard plate on top of it. Again, extra long screws may be required.
