There are many brands of video doorbells and many models within each brand.
Some sit on the surface of your home's exterior, while others require cutting out a rectangle so that the back of the unit can recess into the wall.
When replacing an intercom speaker with a video doorbell, you will most likely have a much larger opening on the side of your house than is required for the smart doorbell.
In this case, you can cover the old opening with one of the plates above, and mount the new doorbell directly to the cover plate (like shown here).

We have many sizes with a variety of screw spacings. Be sure to measure the size of your old box as well as the spacing between the screw holes for mounting the new cover.
Which plate you need depends on 3 things:
MEASURING TIP: Measure using a hard, flat ruler for the greatest accuracy. Thick or curved tape measures should be turned so the edge is against the surface. We do NOT recommend using a cloth tape measure when accuracy is required: they stretch and are not designed for precision.

Partially recessed doorbells (like the Ring Elite) can be mounted with one of two plates with the large rectangle cutout. Which plate you need depends on the screw spacing of your junction box. After you've removed the old intercom speaker, measure the screw spacing on the box & order the plate with the spacing to match.
Surface-mount wireless doorbells should be mounted on a plate without a center cutout. The mounting bracket that comes with the doorbell needs to be screwed into the plate. You will drill holes into the blank plate to match the mounting bracket that was provided with your doorbell. If mounting to a box with 4.5" screw spacing, you may need to shift the camera doorbell up or to the side to ensure you can access both plate mounting screw holes.
Choose a blank plate above that has the overall dimensions and screw spacing required to use with your uncovered intercom box.
Surface-mount hard-wired doorbells should be mounted on a plate with a small round hole in the center. You'll want to feed the wires through the small hole, while still mounting the unit to to the front of the plate using the mounting bracket and hardware that came with the doorbell.
Choose a plate above that has a small round cutout as well as the overall dimensions & screw spread to match your box.
Drilling Required to Mount Video Doorbells
To mount a video doorbell on any plate, you will need to drill holes that align with your particular doorbell mounting bracket.
Each model of video doorbell has its own mounting hardware, with unique screw hole positions for mounting them.
The image here shows one Ring doorbell bracket model, which requires that 4 holes be drilled (either into the side of your house, or into the cover plate if covering up a larger hole for an old intercom speaker).
Partially Recessed Doorbell Units:
The back portion of bulkier, recessed doorbells will go through the large rectangle opening of the plate.
The doorbell's mounting bracket and the front of the doorbell unit both sit on top of the cover once you've drilled the plate.
Unit does not sit flush mount with wall's surface - it sticks out. How much the unit sticks out depends on the specific doorbell model.

Surface-Mount Doorbell Models:
Slim, surface-mount doorbells sit on top of the plate after you drill holes to match your doorbell's hardware.
Hardwired Surface Mount Doorbells
If you plan to hardwire a Ring Doorbell (or install a battery operated Ring unit) in place of your old intercom speaker, select a cover that will fully cover your old box and has the center cut out.
You can feed the doorbell wires through the opening, and the hole will be covered by the unit for your new doorbell system.
You may have to shift the unit up or down rather than mounting centered on the plate, depending on where the wire feeds into the back of your specific doorbell unit or where you need access to the mounting screw hole in the plate itself.
Ring Doorbell Angle Mount Kit
If you are installing your Ring doorbell with an angle mount kit, select a surface-mount cover based on whether the Ring will be used wirelessly or hard-wired in.
Wireless: blank plate with correct dimensions & screw spread.
Hard-wired: small round opening plate with correct dimensions & screw spread.
Flush Mount: A Specialty Installation
One of our customers mounted an older camera doorbell unit underneath the cover to sit flush with the brick surface of his home.
Note that this requires additional mounting hardware and/or a platform to be built up underneath the cover.
We do not have instructions for mounting your doorbell this way, and don't know if this method meets weather-safe standards. We also do not know what current model or brand could potentially work as manufacturers produce newer versions on a regular basis.
This is shown solely as an example of how one customer used the large rectangle opening to achieve a flush-mount doorbell. If you plan to try this, be sure that the camera's lens & doorbell button fit into the plate's cutout (2-1/8" x 3-3/4") and you have the tools and materials for building the substrate for holding your unit.
To achieve a flush-mounted video doorbell that sits under the cover (as shown above), you will need to build a custom strap to hold the unit into the intercom box at the correct depth.
Make sure to allow enough room for the doorbell unit and bracket, as well as note that the cover has 5/32" deep beveled edges.
Note that the DIY mounting strap is not included and must be created by the customer to fit whatever model they intend to use.

Doorbell Cover Ordering Tips
Find the solution for covering an old doorbell that you no longer use, or get a wall plate to update your old intercom system to modern doorbell technology.
Vintage Nutone, Tektone, Executone, etc., units came in many sizes and shapes for intercoms, speakers, doorbells, alarms, and more.
We'll help you find the right cover for to make updating your box easy.
If you have an old ugly intercom box or doorbell chime you need to cover up, read all the info provided below.
STEP 1:
First remove the intercom, speaker or whatever is currently installed.
That way, you can get correct measurements of the box to be covered, and the spacing of the screw holes that the new cover will screw into.
STEP 2:
Remove any raised mounting hardware installed in the box.
For example, this vintage NuTone NF300DWH is sitting on a mounting ring that protrudes from the wall (shown in next image with cover removed).
The ring is 6-5/8” x 4-7/8” and has screw holes at 5.25”.
If you remove the ring, the box itself is about 5” x 3.5” and has holes at 4.5”.

STEP 3:
Measure the overall box dimensions to see how large a plate is necessary to cover the entire box.
A 6.4" cover may be enough, or you might need a larger 7.5" intercom cover.
NOTE:
If the box is recessed in brick or another surface, check the clearance to ensure the brick won't interfere with the new cover.
STEP 4:
Measure the distance between the screw holes (center to center) that your new blank doorbell cover will be screwed into.
Use the smallest increments on your ruler or measuring tape to ensure a very accurate measurement.
STEP 5:
Note that if the box dimensions are larger than the new cover you select, you can use weather stripping or a gasket behind the cover to hide any exposed edges of the box.
Two 3-gang moisture gaskets can be trimmed down and used behind outdoor covers.

Screw spacing is measured center to center (CC) and is vertical distance unless otherwise noted.
Make adjustments for other screw spacings with triangle mounting straps.
For example, a cover with 4.5" screw spacing can mount to a box with 3.5" spacing if installed as shown here.
A 4.5" spaced cover can also mount to a box with 3.75" screw spacing by angling the triangle straps.
Position the straps as shown to either increase or decrease the box's screw spread by 1".
This allows our 4.5" spaced plates to attach to a box with a 5.5" or 3.5" screw spread.
It allows installation of the 5.25" spaced plates over a box with 4.25" or 6.25" screw spacing.
Angle the straps to adjust more or less than 1" if trying to match another dimension. Angling at furthest end of slot gives you maximum adjustment of 1-3/16".

Choose from plates with no center hole (blank), 5/8" center hole (also fits small doorbell button) or large cutout.
*Cutout is 2-1/8" W x 3-3/4" H before plastic mounting ring is installed. Clearance is about 1-7/8" x 2-15/16" with ring installed.
Your electrical box (behind your old speaker) may be slightly larger than the 6.4" covers; use weatherstripping or gaskets to cover edges if needed.
Gaskets can be cut down to accommodate custom sizing.
Fill the cover with your address by adding stickers.
Finishes include bronze, black, white, ivory, almond, or aluminum per version.

Do I need to know the brand and model of my old doorbell?
No. You only need to have the dimensions of the electrical box underneath it and the screw hole distance measured center to center.
Do you have covers predrilled for my new doorbell's mounting brackets?
No. With so many brands of doorbells (Ring, SkyBell, August, Nest, Zmodo, Wisenet, etc.) and frequent model style changes, it is not practical to pre-drill these. We recommend using the drill and installation parts provided by your new doorbell to easily install its mounting bracket to the wall plate cover.
How do I know which cover to choose?
Measure the dimensions of your electrical box (behind your old door bell). Measure the distance between the screw hole centers. Decide if you will be installing your new door bell wirelessly or hard-wiring it. Then use the chart above to choose the correct plate.
Currently, we have old doorbell coverings with screw spacings of either 4.5", 5.25" or 6.58". If your box is different, or you are removing a fire alarm, emergency call box, or another brand of speaker, please send us a photos of the unit and the box along with dimensions and the center-to-center screw spacing. We are interested in adding new sizes.
Need something faster? Electrical box screw spacing adjustment straps may be a good option for adding or subtracting length to your screw spread.
