Simply place the insert behind your cover to change the opening's configuration.
Here, a decora rocker opening is changed to a toggle with an ivory plastic insert. This insert is available in 13 colors.
You will notice some color variation between the inserts and switch plates.
Modular frames can hold anywhere from 1 to 6 jacks.

Have an opening that is no longer in use?
Fill the unused switchplate openings with a dummy switch or blank filler, as shown here.
You'll find a variety of "dummy switch" finishes available.
Plastic inserts are often darker than the cover plates, as shown in the white, ivory and brown examples below.
Inserts are not available in every finish, and are meant to coordinate or blend with plate finishes, rather than be an exact match.
The almond, black and red inserts, however, are the best matches in color to the wall plates in the same finishes.
Although inserts may not be the exact color match you're looking for, they do often times offer the only solution to creating the custom plate configuration that you need.
