The back of the knob has 2 wings. The stem is ridged on the outside with a slit through the center.
Slide the stem into the back of the knob with one of the wings lined up with the slit. The other wing will fit between the outside ridges to keep the fit snug.
From this side view, you can see that rotary knobs sit up and off the cover plate.
This allows space for the knob to be pushed in to turn the lights on and off without hitting and scratching up the cover plate.
