No. Standard electrical wall boxes are 2" wide and are typically set into the Sheetrock, paneling, or plaster. Narrow outlet plates are typically necessary when there are obstructions (cabinetry, moulding, tiles, etc.) butting up against the electric box or slightly covering it. The narrow outlet plates will fit into the tight space between obstructions to cover the rest of exposed part of the box. Consult an electrician regarding codes for your installation.
